- Rare genetic disease
- Aka canons disease
Etiology of white sponge nevus
- Genetic
- Inherited as autosomal dominant trait
- Mutation of genes encoding keratin 4 and 13
Clinical features of white sponge nevus
- Bilateral asymptomatic, white or grey lesions
- Multiple furrows with spongy texture
- Affects most commonly-> Buccal mucosa, floor of mouth, soft palate and labial mucosa
May also develop in vaginal, rectal and laryngeal mucosa

- Clinical features
- Histological examination

Differential diagnosis of White sponge nevus
- Leukoedema
- Chronic biting
- Leukoplakia
- Dyskeratosis congenita
pachyonychia congenita, focal palmoplantar and oral mucosa hyperkeratosis syndrome, and hereditary benign intraepithelial dyskeratos
Treatment of White sponge nevus
No treatment required
Linea alba definition
- Common alteration of buccal mucosa
- Usually bilateral
Etiology of Linea alba
- Mechanical pressure/ irritation on buccal surface of teeth
- Sucking
Linea alba clinical features
- Usually bilateral elevation
- Normal/slightly whitish coloured
- Normal consistency on palpation
- On buccal mucosa on occlusal level of teeth
- May be scalloped
- Seen often in obese individuals

Based on clinical features only
Treatment of linea alba
No treatment required
