Biblical Exegesis
The critical interpretation of a biblical text.
Bible
A word that means “books”, a collection of books that contains the truth of God’s revelation.
Biblical Inerrancy
The doctrine that the books of the Scriptures are free from error regarding the truth God wishes to reveal through Scriptures for the sake of our salvation.
Contextualist Approach
The Interpretation of the bible that takes into account the various contexts for understanding. These contexts include the senses of scripture, Tradition, and the analogy of faith.
Covenant
A solemn agreement between humans or between humans and God where mutual commitments are made.
Dogma
Teachings that are central to Church teaching, in the Catholic Church dogma is defined by the Magisterium.
Eucharist
Te celebration of the entire mass.
Fundamentalist Approach
Interpretation of the Bible and Christian doctrine based on the literal meaning of the bible’s words. The interpretation is made without regard to the historical setting in which the writings were first developed.
New Testament
27 books in the bible written in the times of the apostles, which have the life, teachings, passion, death, resurrection and ascension of Jesus Christ and the beginning of the church as the central theme. These include the Gospels, the Acts of the Apostles, the Pauline letters, the non-Pauline Letters and the books of Revelation.
Old Testament
46 books in the Catholic Tradition - 39 in protestant traditions - that make up the the first parts of thee bible and record salvation history before thee coming of Jesus Christ. There are the books of Law, Historical books, Wisdom books and Prophetic books.
Oral Tradition
The handing on God’s message through words and deeds.
Pentateuch
Greek for “5 books” referring to the first five books of the Bible
Written Tradition
Under the Inspiration of the Holy Spirit, the written message of salvation that was passed down in the oral tradition.
Divine Revelation
God’s Self communication through which he makes known the mystery of his divine plan. A gift accomplished through the words and deeds of Salvation history. Most fully realized in the Passion, death, Resurrection and Ascension of Jesus Christ.
Fathers of the Church
During the early centuries of the Church, those teachers whose writings extended the tradition of the Apostles.
Incarnation
Refers to the mystery of Jesus Christ, the divine son of God, becoming man. Jesus was truly man while remaining truly God.
Magisterium
The living teaching office of the Catholic Church made up of the Pope and all of the bishops under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
Vocation
A call from God to embrace holiness. Specifically to live the holy life as an ordained minister, as a vowed religious (sister or brother), in a Christian marriage or singular life.
Apostolic Succession
The Apostles choose their successors who were given the title bishop. To these successors the Apostles passed on the authority to teach and interrupt Scripture and Tradition.
Canon
These are the books in the Bible that the church recognizes as the inspired word of God
