Chapter 5 Bio Flashcards
renewable fuels made from living organisms (i.e plants and algae)
biofuels
What is required to perform everyday tasks?
energy
Carbon rich energy sources such as coal, petroleum, natural gas, which are performed from the compressed, fossilized remains of once living organisms.
Fossil Fuels
Are fossil fuels considered non renewable?
Yes, because they take millions of years to reform
What percentage of our energy comes from renewable resources such as wind, solar, and biofuels?
9%, however this proportion is growing
the capacity to do work. Energy cannot be created nor destroyed and it must be obtained by an outside source. Humans and animals obtain the energy they need through eating food. Cellular work includes processes such as building complex molecules and moving substances into and out of the cell.
energy
Potential energy stored in the bonds of biological molecules
Potential Energy
Energy cannot be created nor destroyed, but can be transformed from one form to another.
Conservation of Energy
Stored Energy
Potential Energy
The energy of motion or movement
kinetic energy
The Kinetic energy generated by random movements of molecules or atoms
Heat
Is energy conversion efficient?
no with every transformation some energy is lost to the environment as heat
What is the most ultimate source of energy?
the sun
The process by which plants and other autotrophs use the energy of sunlight to make energy rich molecules using carbon dioxide and water. Sunlight + water + carbon dioxide –> oxygen and glucose. It helps mitigate the effects of climate change as well.
Photosynthesis
Organisms such as plants, algae, and certain bacteria that capture the energy of sunlight by photosynthesis.
Autotrophs
