2.1.5 Biological Membranes – Osmosis PAG Flashcards
(11 cards)
What is a serial dilution?
A serial dilution is any dilution in which the concentration decreases by the same factor in each successive step.
If you have 100cm3 of 0.8 mol dm-3 sucrose solution and want to made 100cm3 of 0.4 mol dm-3, how would you do this?
Add 50cm3 of water to 50cm3 of 0.8 mol dm-3.
If you have 100cm3 of 0.4 mol dm-3 sucrose solution and want to made 100cm3 of 0.2 mol dm-3, how would you do this?
Add 50cm3 of water to 50cm3 of 0.4 mol dm-3.
What is the name for the tubing used to create the artificial cells in this PAG?
Visking tubing
In the investigation into the effect of the concentration of the sucrose solution on the mass of an artificial cell, what is the independent variable?
The concentration of the sucrose solution
In the investigation into the effect of the concentration of the sucrose solution on the mass of an artificial cell, what is the dependent variable?
The mass of the artificial cell at the end of the investigation (or the percentage change in mass)
In the investigation into the effect of the concentration of the sucrose solution on the mass of an artificial cell, list three control variables.
Volume of solution inside the artificial cell
Volume of solution outside the artificial cell
Length of time the artificial cell is left in the beaker of solution
Tube of visking tubing
When drawing a graph which variable is placed on the x axis?
The independent variable
When drawing a graph which variable is placed on the y axis?
The dependent variable
What type of graph would you use to plot concentration of sucrose solution against percentage change in mass?
A line graph
Why is percentage change in mass better than simply the change in mass for each artificial cell?
To allow for variations in size of the artificial cells.
