Destruction of pigmented neuronal cells in the substantia nigra in the basal ganglia -> decreased dopamine levels -> degeneration of the dopaminergic pathway -> imbalance of excitatory (ach) and inhibitory (dopamine) neurotransmitters -> impairment of extra pyramidal reacts controlling complex body movements -> tremors, rigidity, bradykinesia, postural changes
