5.1 SG Flashcards
(9 cards)
What charge do protons have, what is their function and where are they in an atom?
They have a positive charge and they are located in the nucleus. Their function is determining the identity of an atom.
What charge to neutrons have and where are they in an atom?
They have no charge and are also located in the nucleus.
What charge do electrons have and where are they in an atom?
They have a negative charge and are located on the valense shells of an atom.
Which charges attract each other?
Positive and negative charges.
What is an isotope?
They are atoms with different amounts of neutrons but are the same element.
What will happen to attraction if the distance of valence elections increases?
The attraction will decrease.
What will happen to attraction if charge is increased?
The attraction will also increase.
What is the atomic mass, element, and ionic charge of an atom with 27 protons, 13 neutrons, and 26 electrons.
The atomic mass would be 40, the element would be cobalt, and the ionic charge would be +1.
How many protons, neutrons, and electrons would there be in an atom of oxygen with an atomic mass of 20 and an ionic charge of -2.
There would be 8 protons, 12 neutrons, and 10 electrons.
