7.1 SG Flashcards
(10 cards)
What makes an amino acid polar?
If an amino acid has hydroxyl it is polar and hydrophilic.
What makes an amino acid acidic?
An amino acid is acidic if it has carboxyl.
What makes an amino acid nonpolar?
If it only contains carbon and hydrogen it is nonpolar.
What makes an amino acid basic?
If it has an amino functional group it is basic.
What atom is typically contained in a hydrophobic side chain?
Carbon.
What kind of amino acid folds to the inside of the protein?
Hydrophobic amino acids.
What kind of amino acids fold to the outside of the protein?
Hydrophilic amino acids.
What is the function of hormones in protein?
They carry molecular messages through blood.
What is the function of enzymes in proteins?
They break down food into small nutrients.
How are the effects of denaturation different from the effects of a mutation?
A mutation affects every protein structure level while denaturation affects only secondary, tertiary, and quarternary.
