What was the Berlin 1936 third reich ideology?

A

Hitler used the olympics as a stage for political propaganda for third reich
Hitler wanted to showcase to the world how efficient nazi germany was
Was also the perfect opportunity for the nazis to prove to the world the superiority of the ‘master race’
Jesse owens (inferior under the nazi ideology) beat lutz lung (ideal nazi athelte), winning 4 gold medals and breaking 11 Olympic records.
Hitler refused to place the gold medal around Jesse owens neck, lutz lang was first to congratulate him

What was the Mexico City 1968 black power demonstration?

A

2 African American athletes (Tommie smith and John Carlos) used the medal ceremony for the 200m race to protest about the lack of civil rights in the USA
They wore gloves on alternating hands (smith wore on right and Carlos wore on left)
Right hand demonstrated black power
Left hand demonstrated black unity
Both wore black socks with no shoes to represent black poverty
Both told to leave olympics as they combined politics with the games

What was the Munich 1972 Palestinian terrorism?

A

Day before games, 8 Palestinian terrorists entered the Olympic village and seized 11 members of the Israeli Olympic team.
Made a political request to release 234 Palestinians that were imprisoned in Israel.
German authorities attempted to rescue the hostages but this failed, resulted in all hostages being killed and 5 terrorists killed, with 3 wounded.
The games went along but they held a memorial service for the victims and postponed the games for a day

What was the moscow 1980 boycott led by the USA?

A

The Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, creating conflict
US president said they would boycott the games if the soviet troops didnt withdraw within a month
Some of the British national teams boycotted the games whereas others didnt want to mix sport and politics so they attended
Overall, almost 6000 competitors attended compared to the estimated 10,000

What was the Los Angeles 1984 boycott led by the Soviet Union?

A

12 weeks before opening ceremony, the Soviet Union announced they would boycott the games, along with 13 other nations in response to the 1980 boycott
Soviet Union accused the united states for using the games for political purposes promoting anti-soviet propaganda.
However, many commentators saw this as a tit-for-tat

Event can cost hosts more than it raises in revenue so overall economic loss
Benefits to employment are short lasting and dry up after the event
If events or participants are linked to failure then sponsors and other funding sources can be affected

If event does well, will reflect good on the leaders, which will result in them getting more votes

If legacy of event is perceived to be negative, can be politically damaging
