  • Prevent night time cramps

- 1st line for Plasmodium Falciparum -MALARIA

QUININE: MOA

A
  • Leg Cramps - reduce the excitability of the motor end plate in response to ACETYLCHOLINE STIMULATION (reduces frequency of muscle contractions)
  • Malaria - Rapidly kills P.Falciparum parasites in schizont stage of the blood

QUININE: ADVERSE EFFECTS

A
  • v toxic and can be fatal in OD
  • Tinnitus, deafness + blindness (which may be permanent)
  • GI upset, HS Rxns
  • Prolongs the QT interval and causes a predisposition to Arrhythmias
  • Hypoglycemia can also occur

QUININE: WARNINGS

A
  • Existing hearing/visual loss
  • Teratogenic -> should not be prescribed in the 1st trimester
  • G6PD deficiency = Precipitate Haemolysis

  • Drugs that prolong the QT interval -> can cause arrhythmias
  • Amiodarone, antipsychotics, quinolones, macrolides, SSRIs
