Anxiety is a negative emotional state associated with stress, causing feelings of worry
Trait anxiety
Trait anxiety is anxiety that is innate
-Anxiety that is stable and continuous
State anxiety
-State anxiety is anxiety that arises from particular situations
-State anxiety is unstable e.g fear of injury, fear of losing, embarrassment
Examples of response to cognitive anxiety
-negative thoughts
-Insomnia
Examples of response to somatic anxiety
-Increased heart rate/blood pressure
-Nausea
-Sweating
Zone of optimal functioning
-Zone of optimal functioning is when the performer’s arousal and anxiety are at their optimal level
-And when the performer is performing at their best
What would a performance look like for someone in the optimal zone of functioning
-Performance is effortless
-Performance is confident
-Performer is concentrated, blocking out any distractions
