Definition of stress
-Stress is the perception of an inability to cope with demands
Causes of stress
-Importance of winning e.g for financial incentives
-Crowds
-Pressure from peers or coaches
-Fear of getting hurt
-Competition
-Frustration
Cognitive stress management techniques
-Positive self talk- telling yourself that you can do it
-Imagery- Picturing a calm environment like a beach in your head
-Negative thought stopping- when you begin to worry, stop the negative thought by saying no in your head
-Mental rehearsal- Imagine yourself performing the skill successfully in your head
-Mindfulness- Use mediation to keep calm
Somatic stress management techniques
-Breathing techniques such as box breathing to use before performing the skill
-Progressive muscular relaxation- tensing and relaxing muscles individually from feet to head
-Biofeedback- using technology such as heart rate monitors to recognise when you are becoming too anxious
