Intrinsic motivation
Intrinsic motivation is an internal drive to participate, such as for performing for personal satisfaction
Intrinsic motivation evaluations
POSITIVES
-More likely to encourage long-term participation
-Encourages self reliance
NEGATIVES
-Fun and enjoyment can decrease over time, leading to drop out
-Cognitive learners may find tasks difficult and not enjoyable, leading to drop out
Extrinsic motivation
-Extrinsic motivation is the external drive to participate, such as performing for external rewards e.g money
Extrinsic motivation evaluations
POSITIVES
-external rewards can get beginners interested in the sport
-Receiving external rewards can increase self confidence
NEGATIVES
-Can result in a reliance on external rewards that, if removed, can lead to dropout
-Less likely to encourage long-term participation
-Can be demotivating if you do not receive the rewards
