Forming
-This is where the group first meets and gets to know each other
-High dependency on the leader for guidance
-No agreement on roles or goals and little agreement on direction
Storming
-Conflict within the group as team members jostle for position in the team
-Team may have difficulty making decisions
-Coordination issues, with members of the group pulling in different directions
Norming
-All team members are working towards the same goal
-Roles are now accepted in the team
-team is in agreement and members show respect towards leaders
Performing
-Clear vision and goals
-Little interference from the leader
-There is trust and mutual respect between team leaders as they pull in the same direction to achieve a goal
How can a coach encourage a group to move to the next stage
-Establish clear goals
-Assign roles and responsibilities
-Create team bonding activities for the group to take part in
Steiner’s model of group effectiveness
-Actual productivity= potential productivity- faulty processes
Why may a larger group have more faulty processes than a smaller group
-More chance of breakdown in communication
-More chance of motivational issues
-Ringelmann effect may occur- as group size increases, individual performance decreases
-More chance of social loafing occuring- letting others do the work in a group
-Less chance of everyone having a role
-Lower chance of cohesion
