Describe Chelludari’s model of leadership
ANTECEDENTS
-Situational characteristics- The environment or circumstance that is in front of the leader e.g dangerous activity etc
-Leader characteristics- What leadership style the leader wants to use e.g autocratic
-Member characteristics- Who is the group being led e.g gender, skill level, how many are there
LEADER BEHAVIOUR
-Required behaviour- What leadership style should be used based on situational and member characteristics e.g group of boys and dangerous activity should use an autocratic leadership style
-Preferred behaviour- What leadership style would the group members prefer to be used e.g a group of females may prefer a democratic leadership style
-Actual behaviour -With all of these factored behaviour, this is the leadership style that is actually chosen by the leader
-Performance and satisfaction- The more componenets that are in line, the higher the performance and satisfaction will be
Trait perspective theory of leadership
-Trait perspective theory of leadership states that individuals are born with innate characteristics that make them good leaders
-Does not take into account the effect of the environment
Social learning theory of leadership
-Social learning theory of leadership states that leadership characteristics are learned from others
-You observe leadership characteristics from high status individuals or significant others and copy them yourself
-These characteristics are learned if reinforced
-Social learning theory does not take into account innate characteristics
Interactionist theory of leadership
-The interactionist theory of leadership states that both innate characteristics and the environment influence leadership characteristics
-States that individuals are born with innate leadership characteristics but they only become apparent when faced with certain situations
-These leadership characteristics will show more when the situation demands it
Characteristics of an effective leader
-Good communication skills
-Clear vision and goals
-Good subject knowledge
-Motivation
Prescribed leader
-Prescribed leaders are selected from outside of the group e.g new managers or coaches
Emergent leader
-Emergent leaders come from within the group e.g being nominated to be the captain
Why might emergent leaders be better for situations
-They have already been accepted by the group
-They know the team dynamics of the group
- They have already demonstrated their ability and commitment
Types of leadership styles (autocratic) and where they are useful
-Autocratic leadership style makes decisions with little or no input from the group
-Autocratic leadership style is useful in dangerous activities, larger groups, hostile groups, group of males, when there are time constraints, and for groups of beginners
Democratic
-Democratic leadership style involves the group in decision making
-Democratic leadership style is useful for smaller groups, safer activities, no time constraints, and groups of females
Laissez faire
-Laissez-faire allows group members to make their own decisions, and provide little guidance or direction
-Laissez-faire is useful with elite performers, in assessment tasts, with creative tasks, and during tasks that require decision making (also if the leader trusts the group members)
