Attitude
-An attitude is the way in which we may act towards someone or something
Factors influencing the formation of attitudes
-Peer group
-Parenting
-Religion
-Past experiences
Three components of attitude
-Cognitive component is our beliefs and knowledge about something, usually formed through past experiences or from others
-Affective component is our emotional reaction to something, whether we like or dislike something
-Behavioural component is how we actually behave or respond to these feelings and knowledge
Cognitive dissonance
-Cognitive dissonance is when an individual holds two or more opposing attitudes
-A new belief is introduced to challenge the current belief
-This brings the attitude components in line by removing discomfort
-The more uncomfortable an individual is, the greater the desire ot change one of their attitudes
Factors influencing the effectiveness of “persuasive communication”
Persuader- a high-status persuader or more people persuading is more effective
Message- A high-quality message that is supported by evidence and well-presented is more effective
Recipient- the recipient of the message needs to be open to persuasion and not stubborn
