Bowlby’s Internal Working Model (Attachment) Flashcards
(6 cards)
Internal Working Model
Bowlby suggested infants develop a schema based on their attachment to their PCG
This schema acts as a template for how relationships work
Continuity Hypothesis
Individuals future relationships will follow a pattern based on their IWM
What did Hazen and Shaver argue regarding adult relationships?
That they are a continuation of their attachment style
Secure children will be more socially capable than insecure types
Influence of early attachment Positive Evaluations
Hazan and Shavers love quiz assessing attachment types found 56% secure(balance of closeness and independence), 25% avoidant (avoid intimacy) and 19% resistant (couldn’t cope with independence)
McCarthy found adults with long-lasting adult friendships and romantic relationships were securely attached at infancy
Bowlby’s Maternal Deprivation Theory
If child’s monotropic attachment is disrupted during the critical (period of 30 months) due to separation from the mother, this deprivation will lead to problems with social, emotional and intellectual development
Negative Evaluation of IWM
Just because there is a relationship between two factors, there isn’t necessarily a causal relationship
