Carbon Monoxide Response Procedure 206-03 Flashcards
(22 cards)
What is CO?
A colourless, odourless, tasteless gas that is a by-product of combustion
CO is produced from incomplete or faulty combustion of any fuel.
How does CO affect the body?
It enters the body through the lungs and displaces oxygen in the bloodstream, suffocating victims
Prolonged exposure can lead to brain damage and death.
What is the maximum safe working level for CO in Saskatchewan workplaces?
25 parts per million (ppm) over an eight hour period and 190 ppm over 15 minutes
This regulation is set by the Saskatchewan Occupational Health and Safety Regulations.
What is the maximum safe level of CO in residential settings as per Health Canada?
11 ppm over an eight hour period or 25 ppm over a one hour period
Refer to appendix A, ‘Carbon Monoxide - Exposure Guidelines for Residential Indoor Air Quality’ - Health Canada.
True or False: CO can cause brain damage.
True
CO displaces oxygen, which can lead to severe health consequences.
Fill in the blank: CO is produced from _______ combustion of any fuel.
incomplete or faulty
This type of combustion does not fully utilize the fuel, leading to CO production.
What CO level is considered dangerous to a developing fetus?
10 ppm
Pregnant women should be evacuated when CO levels are 10 ppm and above.
What is the responsibility of RFPS personnel upon arrival at a CO incident?
Confirm CO problem, ensure safety of occupants, alert appropriate agencies
Agencies may include SaskEnergy.
What should the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) follow when a CO call is received?
RFPS SOP 302-04 Response Codes Inside the City Limits
What must station officers notify the ECC about?
When the RFPS CO monitor is out of service
What should personnel don before entering a property with a solid alarm from the owner’s CO detector?
Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA)
What should be done if CO readings are 11 ppm or less?
Interview occupants, investigate CO sources, suggest evacuation of vulnerable groups
Vulnerable groups include pregnant women, children, and the elderly.
What is the first step after confirming CO readings of 11 ppm or less?
Advise occupants that some CO was detected
What should RFPS personnel do after clearing the CO monitor in clean air?
Take a second reading
What action should be taken if the second reading indicates a level above zero but not elevated?
Ventilate the building for approximately 10 minutes
Use natural ventilation or an electric extractor, not positive pressure ventilation.
What should be done if CO levels re-occur after ventilation?
Request ECC to contact SaskEnergy for investigation
What should occupants be advised if their CO detector activates again after command is terminated?
Call 911 immediately
What symptoms indicate the need to follow specific procedures for carbon monoxide poisoning?
Headache, flu-like symptoms, loss of muscular control, weariness, weakness, dizziness, vomiting, tightness across the forehead, watering and smarting of the eyes
What is the first action to take if any occupants show signs of carbon monoxide poisoning?
Advise the occupants to leave
What should ECC personnel do when CO readings are above 11 ppm?
Contact SaskEnergy to investigate the incident
What should be done if the source of CO cannot be determined?
Request ECC to contact SaskEnergy
What should the owner/occupant be informed about before command is terminated?
They are responsible for rectifying any problems found
