When should firefighters use elevators during emergencies?
For all emergencies other than a medical call, initial arriving firefighting crews shall use elevators in Fire Service Operation any time they are used to ascend a structure.

An elevator shall be utilized to ascend a structure anytime an alarm or fire location is on the 6th floor or greater.
When should firefighters avoid using an elevator?
Firefighters shall not use an elevator if the reported fire or alarm location is below grade.

A firefighter elevator identified by an RFPS decal and/or red helmet.
What should be done if a red helmet elevator is not available?
A firefighter elevator identified by a yellow helmet will be utilized.

An elevator with no identifier may be utilized if the emergency dictates.
What type of elevators should not be used for ascending a structure?
Do not use construction elevators to ascend a structure.
Who is designated as Elevator Control during an incident?
A firefighter shall remain with the elevator at all times during an incident and will be designated ‘Elevator Control.’
What equipment should Elevator Control be equipped with?
Elevator Control will be equipped with full PPE, including radio, flashlight, and Halligan for self-rescue.
What should be checked before ascending in an elevator?
A flashlight shall be directed upward into the opening between the car and the hoist way to check for smoke, water, or fire in the elevator shaft.
What action should be taken if smoke, water, or fire is detected in the elevator shaft?
That elevator shall not be used, and Incident Command shall be notified.
Where should the Elevator Control Firefighter return after crews exit the elevator?
The Elevator Control Firefighter shall return to the lobby for subsequent arriving firefighters immediately after crews exit the elevator two floors below the fire location.
What should be tested prior to ascending in an elevator?
Elevator functions such as door open, door close, call cancel, and the automatic closure feature.
How many firefighters typically ascend in an elevator?
Typically, no more than seven (7) firefighters will ascend with the elevator.
What should be done if the firefighter helmet warning light inside the elevator is flashing?
Do not use the elevator.
What should be done if the elevator is not functioning properly or acts erratically?
Press the call cancel button and exit at the next available floor if safe to do so.
What must be done with non-RFPS personnel and equipment before emergency operations begin?
All non-RFPS personnel and equipment shall be removed from elevators.
What should be transmitted if a firefighter becomes trapped in an elevator shaft?
Either a PRIORITY TRAFFIC or MAYDAY should be transmitted.
When should a PRIORITY TRAFFIC be transmitted?
If there is no immediate danger to the trapped firefighters.
What should be done if a firefighter feels they are in need of immediate assistance?
A MAYDAY should be transmitted.
What should be avoided when trying to escape from a trapped elevator?
Forcing an elevator from the inside should be avoided.
Why should trained personnel be deployed for elevator rescues?
To extricate the trapped firefighters safely.
