What is the purpose of the SOP for picking up and disposing of needles?
To provide a standard operating procedure (SOP) for picking up and disposing of needles (sharps)
This SOP is specifically for use when the Street Culture Project is not available.

Regina Fire & Protective Services (RFPS)
RFPS is responsible for the collection of sharps in public areas.
Will RFPS pick up sharps from private residences?
No

What will the Emergency Communication Centre (ECC) advise regarding sharps disposal?
The owner or resident of sharps disposal procedures
This advisory follows the guidelines outlined in supplementary information.
What will happen when RFPS is requested to pick up sharps on public property?
They will place them in the approved sharps container
This follows the procedures described in the SOP.
What communication method will the service truck use to report the sharps pick-up assignment?
Support 1 Talkgroup
This is the designated talkgroup for reporting the assignment.
What information will the service truck report to the ECC after acknowledging receipt of the assignment?
The following information about the pick-up
-arrival on scene
-number of sharps found
-Correct address and if possible, the name of the responsible party
-termination of incident 
Specific details of the pick-up are to be reported.
What should be followed when the service truck is not available or dispatched after sunset to pick up sharps?
The procedure outlined in the document must be followed.
Includes dispatching a unit as per REPS SOP 302-04 Response Codes Inside City Limits.
What must a unit respond as upon arrival at the incident?
Available on radio (AOR).
The Incident Commander will determine the unit’s status as AOR or on-scene (OS) and not available to respond.
What can be done with sharps found in non-approved containers on public property?
They can be picked up and transported if safe to do so.
Arrangements should be made to deliver the container as per point 2.2.3.
Under what conditions will REPS not normally pick up sharps?
From inside sheds, garages, houses, or larger structures.
The owner or responsible party will be advised as per supplementary information section 3.
What should the assistant chief do if notified about sharps in larger structures?
Refer the information to Service Regina at 306-777-7000.
This is part of the notification process regarding sharps disposal.
Where will all sharps collected by RFPS be disposed of?
At the Street Project Office at 2110 Hamilton Street, Monday to Friday during regular business hours.
This ensures proper disposal of sharps collected by RFPS.
What action should be taken when a sharps container is ¾ full?
The station officer will arrange for the service truck to pick up the full container and exchange it for a new one.
This is part of the regular maintenance process for sharps containers.
Where should sharps containers not be taken?
To the Emergency Departments.
This is to ensure proper disposal protocols are followed.
What can be arranged if the service truck is not available?
Alternate arrangements can be made through the senior captain.
This allows for continued management of sharps disposal.
