Water Supply/Hydrant Use & Notification 202-04 Flashcards
(27 cards)
What is residual pressure?
Residual pressure is that part of the total pressure which is not used to overcome friction or gravity while forcing water through fire hose, pipe fittings and adapters. It is also defined as the pressure remaining once water has begun flowing.
Residual pressure is an important concept in firefighting, as it affects the efficiency of water delivery to the fire scene.
What does forward lay refer to in firefighting?
Forward lay is the laying of a supply line from a water source (hydrant or tanker dump site) to the scene of the fire.
Forward lay is crucial for ensuring a steady supply of water to combat fires effectively.
What is the minimum water supply requirement per NFPA 1710 for a working fire?
1520 L/min (400 gpm) for 30 minutes
This supply must be maintained by an operator.
What are exceptions to laying a supply line at a fire scene?
- Obvious critical rescue requiring a full crew
- Uncertainty of the actual fire location in a multi-unit building complex
- Hydrant within 15 metres (50 ft.) of the fire
Who may be tasked with securing a water supply as part of the incident action plan?
Incoming crews
When should a second supply line be considered?
- In any working incident involving multi-story/multi-family dwellings
- In commercial properties including strip malls or industrial complexes with large volumes of fire
- When scene access challenges require fire control from multiple sides of the structure
What must be considered when laying supply lines?
Access of later arriving apparatus including aerial apparatus
Where should the supply line be laid in relation to the roadway?
Along the side of the roadway that the hydrant is on
What is the maximum speed for the driver/operator when proceeding toward the fire after receiving a signal?
15 km/h
What is the first step in the procedure for connecting to a hydrant?
Ensure the 65 mm (2-1/2) caps are secure.
What should be done after removing the 125 mm (5 in) cap from the hydrant?
Fully open the hydrant barrel using the hydrant wrench.
What is the minimum time to flow water from the open port during hydrant connection?
5 seconds
What is the required residual pressure to protect the water system during pumping operations?
140 kilopascals (kPa) (20 psi)
What must all apparatus in a relay pumping system maintain?
A minimum residual pressure of 140 kPa (20 psi)
What communication is necessary in a relay pumping system?
Communication between supply and attack pump operators
In what mode must the attack pump operate during relay pumping?
Pressure mode
Fill in the blank: A safety margin is required to protect the _______.
water system and apparatus
What should be done upon the termination of suppression activities?
- Fully close the hydrant barrel
- Disconnect the supply line
- Reattach caps
- Gather all removed/used adapters
What should be done after using a hydrant?
Notify the proper agency of the hydrant use
What must be notified anytime a hydrant has been used within city limits?
Water Operations hydrant shop
This ensures hydrants are properly serviced after use.
Who shall notify the Emergency Communications Centre (ECC) when a fire hydrant is used within city limits?
The Incident Commander (IC)
Notification should be as soon as possible.
What information will the ECC provide to the Water Operations hydrant shop?
When and where a fire hydrant has been used within city limits
Contact information: 777-7772 or email: hydrantshop@regina.ca
What must be noted in the CAD Notes Section of FDM by ECC personnel?
The time that the Water Operations hydrant shop was notified
This is part of the documentation process.
What is required for hydrant use notification outside city limits?
The RM of Sherwood must be notified via email
This applies anytime a hydrant has been used within their boundaries.
