Q

What is coronary heart disease?

A

Coronary heart disease is when the coronary arteries, that supply the blood to the muscle of the heart, get blocked by layers of fatty material building up

Q

If the coronary arteries get blocked, what affect does it have on the body?

A

If the coronary arteries get blocked, it causes the arteries to become narrow, so blood flow is restricted and there is a lack of oxygen to the heart muscle. This can result in a heart attack.

6
Q

What are stents?

A

Stents are tubes that are inserted inside arteries.

7
Q

What do stents do?

A

They keep the arteries open, making sure blood can pass through to the heart muscles. This keeps the person’s heart beating.

15
Q

What does having too much LDL cholesterol in your bloodstream cause?

A

Too much LDL cholesterol can cause fatty deposits to form inside arteries, which can lead to coronary heart disease.

16
Q

What are statins?

A

Statins are drugs that can reduce the amount of LDL cholesterol present in the bloodstream. This slows down the rate of fatty deposits forming.

17
Q

What are the advantages of statins?

A

1) By reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol in the blood, statins can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, strokes, and heart attacks.
2) As well as reducing the amount of LDL cholesterol, statins can increase the amount of a beneficial type of cholesterol (HDL cholesterol) in your bloodstream. HDL cholesterol can remove LDL cholesterol from the blood.
3) some studies say that statins may also help prevent other diseases.

18
Q

What are the disadvantages of statins?

A

1) Statins are a long term drug that must be taken regularly. There is a risk that the person could forget to take them.
2) Statins can sometimes cause negative side effects (e.g. headaches). Some of these side effects can be serious (e.g. kidney failure, liver damage, and memory loss)
3) the effect of statins isn’t instant. It takes time for their effect to kick in.

19
Q

Can an artificial heart pump blood around the body?

20
Q

What will doctors do if a patient has heart failure?

A

If a patient has heart failure, doctors may perform a heart transplant (or heart and lungs transplant if lungs are also diseased) using donor organs from people who have recently died.

21
Q

What happens if a patient has heart failure, and there aren’t any donor organs available?

A

Doctors may fit an artificial heart.

22
Q

What are artificial hearts?

A

Artificial hearts are mechanical devices that pump blood for a person whose own heart has failed.

23
Q

Are artificial hearts used as a temporary or permanent fix?

A

They are usually used as a temporary fix, to keep a person alive until a donor heart can be found. In some cases, they are used as a permanent fix, which reduces the need for a donor heart.

24
Q

What is an advantage of an artificial heart?

A

Artificial hearts are less likely to be rejected by the body’s immune system than a donor heart. This is because they are made from metals or plastics, so the body doesn’t recognise them as an attack.

25
What is a disadvantage of artificial hearts?
1)Surgery to fit an artificial heart can lead to bleeding and infection. 2)Artificial hearts don’t work as well as healthy natural ones. 3)Parts of the heart could wear out, or the electrical motor could fail. 4)Blood doesn’t flow through artificial hearts as smoothly, which can cause blood clots and lead to strokes.
26
Other than getting a heart transplant, or getting an artificial heart fitted, what other surgeries could be performed for cardiovascular disease?
Surgeons can replace the valves in a patients heart.
27
How can heart valves be damaged?
Heart attacks, infection, or old age.
28
What does a damaged valve cause?
It can cause the valve tissue to stiffen, and it won’t open properly. Or a valve may become leaky, allowing blood to flow in both directions, rather than just forward. This means that blood doesn’t circulate as effectively as normal.
29
What can be a replacement valve?
Human valves, or other mammal’s (e.g. cows or pigs), or they can be man made (mechanical valves)
30
What is artificial blood?
Artificial blood is a blood substitute
31
Give an example of artificial blood.
Saline (a salt solution)
32
What does artificial blood replace?
The lost volume of blood.
33
Is artificial blood safe?
Yes, as long as no air bubbles get into the blood.
34
Fill the gap. Artificial blood can keep people alive even if they have lost _/3 of their red blood cells.
2
35
When giving a person artificial blood, it may give them enough time to produce what?
Red blood cells
36
When given artificial blood, if a patient continues to not produce red blood cells, what will doctors need to do?
A blood transfusion
