Plant Cell Organisation Flashcards
(16 cards)
Plant cells are organised into what 2 things?
Tissues and organs
Give 3 plant organs
Stems, roots, and leaves,
Name the 5 plant tissues.
Epidermal tissue, palisade mesophyll tissue, spongy mesophyll tissue, xylem and phloem, and meristem tissue
What is the epidermal tissue?
The epidermal tissue covers the whole plant
What is the palisade mesophyll tissue?
The part of the leaf where most of the photosynthesis occurs
What is the spongy mesophyll tissue?
Contains big air spaces to allow gases to diffuse in and out of the cells.
What are the xylem and phloem?
They transport things like water, mineral ions, and food around the plant (through the roots, stems, and leaves)
Describe the characteristics of meristem tissue.
A plant tissue found at the growing tips of shoots and roots, and is able to differentiate into lots of different types of plant cell, allowing the plant to grow.
What is the epidermal tissue covered with, and why is it an advantage?
The edpidermal tissue is covered in a waxy cuticle, and it helps reduce water loss by evaporation
Why is the upper epidermis transparent?
So that light can pass through it to the palisade layer
The palisade layer has lots of what?
Chloroplasts for photosynthesis, which is why they are near to the top. To get a lot of light.
What is the function of xylem and phloem?
They deliver water and other nutrients to the entire leaf, and take away the glucose produced by photosynthesis. They also help support the structure of the leaf
What are the tissues of the leaves adapted for?
Efficient gas exchange
What are stomata?
Little holes in the lower epidermis which let CO2 diffuse directly into the leaf.
What is the stomata controlled by?
The opening and closing of the stomata is controlled by guard cells.
What in the spongy mesophyll tissue increases the rate of diffusion of gases?
Air spaces
