How do you prepare your food sample?
1) get a peice of food and break it up using a pestle and mortar
2) transfer the ground up food to a beaker and add some distilled water
3) stir the mixture with a glass rod to dissolve some of the food
4) filter the solution using a funnel lined with filter paper to get rid of solid bits of food
What solution is used to test for starch?
Iodine
What solution is used to test for sugar?
Benedict
What solution is used to test for protein?
Biuret
What solution is used to test for lipids?
Ethanol
What colour will the food sample go if starch is present?
From brown-orange to blue-black
What colour will the food sample go if sugar is present?
From blue to green (low sugar), yellow (more sugar), brick red (lots of sugar)
What colour will the food sample go if sugar is present?
From blue to brick red
What other colours will a food sample turn if sugar is present (depending on severity, in order)
Green, and yellow
Which food test needs a water bath? Why?
Benedict because it changes colour when heated

From blue to purple

From clear to cloudy white
