Circulatory System— Blood Flashcards
(17 cards)
What is blood?
A tissue
What do red blood cells carry and deliver around the body?
Oxygen
What is the shape of a red blood cell?
Biconcave disc
How does the shape of a red blood cell make it specialised for its job?
The biconcave disc shape gives the red blood cell a larger surface area for absorbing oxygen
Do red blood cells have a nucleus?
No, they are prokaryotic cells.
Why do red blood cells have no nucleus?
For more room to carry oxygen
What Is the name of the red pigment in red blood cells?
Haemoglobin
What does haemoglobin do in the lungs, and what does it become?
It binds to oxygen, and becomes oxyhaemoglobin.
What happens to oxyhaemoglobin in body tissues?
Oxyhaemoglobin splits up into haemoglobin and oxygen to release oxygen into the cells.
What do white blood cells do?
White blood cells defend against infection
What can white blood cells do?
Some can change shape to engulf unwelcome microorganisms(pathogens),in a process called phagocytosis.
Others produce antibodies to fight against pathogens, as well as antitoxins to neutralise any toxins produced by the pathogens.
Do white blood cells have a nucleus?
Yes
What do platelets do?
They help the blood clot at a wound to stop blood from pouring out and pathogens getting in
Do platelets have a nucleus?
No
What does a lack of platelets cause?
Lack of platelets can cause excessive bleeding and bruising
What is plasma?
Plasma is a pale straw-coloured liquid which carries everything in blood
What does plasma carry? (11)
Red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, glucose, amino acids, carbon dioxide, urea, hormones, proteins, antibodies, and antitoxins
