Transpiration And Translocation Flashcards
(9 cards)
Flowering plants have two types of vessel, what are the called?
Xylem and phloem
What do phloem tubes do?
Transport food (mainly dissolved sugars), for immediate use or storage
Does the phloem transport in both directions?
Yes
What transport process does phloem use?
Translocation
Describe how the structure of phloem vessels are adapted to their function.
They are made of columns of elongated living cells with small pores in the end walls to allow cell sap to flow through
What do xylem tubes do?
transports water and mineral ions from the roots up the plant stem and into the leaves
Describe the structure of xylem vessels.
They are made of dead cells joined end to end, with no end walls between them and therefore a hole down the middle. They are strengthened with a material called lignin
What transport process does xylem use?
Transpiration
Dies xylem transport in both directions?
No it transports upwards
