Transpiration is caused by the evaporation and diffusion of water from a plants surface.

Why is there a constant transpiration stream?
A
Evaporation causes a slight shortage of water in the leaf, so more water is drawn up for the rest of the plant through the xylem vessels to replace it. This means more water is drawn up from the roots, so there’s a constant stream.

The movement of water from the roots, through the xylem and out the leaves.
