What is social psychology?
views how people affect eachother and looks at the power of situation
Cognitive dissonance
Festinger;psychological discomfort arising from holding two or more inconsistent attitudes, behaviors, or cognition’s (thoughts, beliefs, or opinions).
ex when you know it is bad for your health but you keep smoking
What is conformity
Adopting attitudes or behaviors of others because of pressure to do so.
ex Asch’s experiment. asked people what line was the shortest. everyone picked the wrong answer and so the person would also pick the wrong answer due to peer pressure.
normative social influence vs informational social influence
- Normative:people conform to the group norm to fit in, to feel good, and to be accepted by the group.
- Informational: people conform because they believe the group is competent and has the correct information, particularly when the task or situation is ambiguous.
What is obedience?
change of an individual’s behavior to comply with a demand by an authority figure.
Milgram’s experiment. Told people that they would be teaching people words and if the student got the words wrong then they(the person teaching the words) would have to shock them.
what are the two attributes of obedience?
personality attributes and attributes of a social system
what is groupthink?
odification of the opinions of members of a group to align with what they believe is the group consensus
What is the bystander effect?
phenomenon in which a witness or bystander does not volunteer to help a victim or person in distress.Just watch what is occurring. due to Diffusion of responsibility many people expect someone else to step up and do something about the situation
Define prejudice
Negative attitudes and feelings toward individuals based solely on their membership in a particular group
define discrimination
Negative actions toward individuals as a result of their membership in a particular group
