Q

rouge and mirror test

A

for children
* called mark test for animals (elephants, porpoises, apes, chickens)
* put a baby in front of a mirror, put a dot of rouge somewhere on their face. until 18 months, they’re not aware enough to recognize themself. when they touch their face, they pass the test

Q

Tarzan syndrome

A

as we got bigger we had to develop an accurate sense of ourselves and how we impact our environment. small animals in treetops need to be aware of branch size, but as we left the trees, our awareness focused on social knowledge, body language

Q

hypnogogic state

A

the stage before Stage 1 sleep; you’re starting to fall asleep, starting to relax, breathing and heart rate slow down, you mentally review the day

15
Q

narrative dream

A

has a story. is visual like a movie. feels like a long time but is usually 15 min, so eyes move rapidly to keep up with fast-paced dream

17
Q

why do we forget dreams?

A

when we sleep our cerebral cortex (conscious brain) is off, old brain controls dreams. when you wake up, conscious brain takes over again and suppresses unconscious brain

18
Q

how many sleep cycles per night?

19
Q

circadian rhythm

A

the biological clock, regular body rhythm occurring on 24-hour cycle
* melatonin produced in pineal gland when it gets dark out. seeing the sun thru eyelids stops melatonin production

20
Q

what are the 2 theories about why we sleep?

A

repair theory and adaptive non-responding

21
Q

repair theory

A

we sleep to recover from the damage of the day

22
Q

adaptive non-responding

A

we’re not well-suited to survive at night (can’t see + fight predators), so we sleep to stay safe

23
Q

what are 4 theories about why we dream?

A

repression hypothesis, activation-synthesis hypothesis (random neural activity), problem solving hypothesis, memory consolidation

24
Q

why do babies need more REM sleep?

A

for their development; cross-wiring occurs during REM sleep

25
repression hypothesis
* Freud * unconscious mind is the seat of repressed memories -> you unconsciously repress things that make you feel bad/guilty * dreams come from the unconscious mind, so repressed thoughts come out in dreams; every dream has two ways of looking at it (manifest + latent)
26
manifest content
apparent dream storyline (prof's ex: escaping maryland)
27
latent content
a dream's hidden meaning (prof's ex: breaking up with Mary Ann)
28
activation-synthesis hypothesis
when you sleep, cerebral cortex is turned off, but random neural activity comes from it and the cerebellum makes a story from the pieces
29
problem-solving hypothesis
dreams are used to solve problem that have come up in our lives. 1st dream = a problem from that day; 2nd dream = a problem from earlier in life; 3rd dream = similar; 4th dream = solution / new idea
30
memory consolidation
dreams help us consolidate the important stuff we learned in the day, storing it into LTM
31
insomnia
not being able to sleep; getting insufficient/unsatisfying sleep
32
pseudoinsomnia
when people think they don't sleep (they actually do)
33
narcolepsy
sudden sleep attack, triggered by a strong emotion
34
sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)
when a healthy baby suddenly dies; oxygen tract builds around their face so they start breathing their own CO2 * Back to Sleep program: put baby on back, remove artificial fabrics+toys
35
sleep apnea
stop breathing during deep sleep, which brings you to a lighter level and disrupts your amount of rest, which can compromise your immune system
36
sleep walking / somnambulism
occurring during deep sleep, walking/moving around while you're sleeping. * more common among kids * don't remember when they wake up
37
sleep talking / somniloquy
talking in your sleep
38
bed wetting / enuresis
involuntary urination while sleeping
39
periodic leg movement disorder (PLMD)
* formerly known as nocturnal myoclonus * common among old people * kicking + thrashing in ur sleep, may fall out of bed or pull a muscle
40
nightmare
bad dream that occurs during REM sleep
41
sleep terror
sleep disorder in which a person suddenly awakens from stage 4 sleep in a panic, typically with no recollection of a bad dream
