Chapter 1 Flashcards
(40 cards)
Organism
Living individual
Atoms
Particles that all living structures are composed of at the Smallest scale
Molecules
Atoms bonded together
Organelles
Grouped together molecules that are compartments that carry out specialized functions in the cell
Cell
Basic unit of life
Tissues
Grouped cells with functions the make up organs
Organs
Made up of tissues
Organ systems
Multiple organs linked together
Population
Members of the same species occupying the same place at the same time
Community
Populations of different species in a region
Ecosystem
Living and no living components of an area
Biosphere
All parts of the planet that can support life
Emergent properties
Complex functions that arise from physical and chemical interactions among a systems components
Producers
(Autotrophs) make their own food by extracting energy and nutrients from no living sources
Consumers
Obtain energy and nutrients by eating other organisms living or dead. (heterotrophs)
Decomposers
Heterotrophs that obtain energy and nutrients from waste or dead organisms
Homeostasis
Process by which a cell or organism maintains a state on equilibrium
Asexual reproduction
Genetic information comes from one parent and all offspring are identical
Sexual reproduction
Genetic material from two parents United to form an offspring which has new combinations of traits
Adaptation
An inherited characteristic or behavior that enables an organism to survive and reproduce successfully
Natural selection
Process in which individuals with certain inherited traits contribute more offspring to the next generation than do the individual lacking those traits
Evolution
A change in the genetic make up of a population over multiple generations
Taxonomy
Biological science in naming and classifying organisms
Species
Basic unit of classification which designates a distinctive type of organism
