Chapter 16 Flashcards
Capsid
Protein coat surrounding the genetic material. Shape determines a virus’ overall form
Envelope
Outer layer derived from the host’s cell membrane
Bacteriophages
Viruses that infect bacteria
Host range
The kinds of organisms or cells that a virus can infect
Reservoir
The site of a virus where it exists on nature
Lytic infection
A virus enters a bacterium, immediately replicates, and causes the host cell to burst as it releases A flood of new viruses
Lysogenic infection
The genetic material of a virus is replicated along with the bacterial chromosome but the cell is not immediately destroyed
Prophage
The DNA of a lysogenic bacteriophage that is inserted into the host chromosome
Latent infection
Viral genetic information is inside the cell but not expressed. As long as the infection remains latent, new viruses aren’t produced
Vaccine
Teaches the immune system to recognize one of more molecular components of a virus without actually exposing the person to the disease
Viroid
A Highly wound circle of rna that lacks a protein coat
Prion
Proteinaceous infectious particle. A normal membrane protein that can exist in multiple three dimensional shapes
Virus
Genetic information encoded in a protein coat
