Chapter 18 Flashcards
Protist
A eukaryotes that does not fit the description of a plant, fungus, or animal
Euglenoids
Unicellular Protists with elongated cells
Dinoflagellates
characterized by two flagella of different lengths (Marine protists)
Golden algae
Named for their color
Diatoms
Unicellular algae with two part silica cell walls that confer a variety of ornate shares
Beown algae
The largest and most complex Protists. Although they are multicellular they resemble the golden algae in their pigments and their reproductive cells
Red algae
Relatively large. Marine organisms tat are somewhat similar to green algae in that they store carbs as a modified form of starch
Green algae
The Protists that share the most similarities with plants
Alternation of generations
Feature of green algae life cycle in which a multicellular haploid phase is followed by a diploid
Plasmodial slime mold
Feeding stage consists of a a mass thousands of diploid nuclei enclosed by a single cel membrane
Cellular Slime mold
Retain their membranes throughout the life cycle
Water molds
De composers of parasites of plants and animals in moist enviroments
Flagellated Protozoa
Unicellular organisms with one or more flagella
Trypanosomes
Group of disease causing flagellates. Whip shaped parasites that invade the bloodstream
Amoeboid Protozoa
Produce cytoplasmic extensions known as pseudopodia which are important in locomotion
