Q

Study of Consciousness

A

Consciousness is a psychological (hypothetical) construct - it is believed to exist but cannot be directly observed or measured. Much of what is known is inferred or assumed.

Q

What are Beta Waves?

A

Description: High frequency brainwaves and low amplitude

Association: typical brainwave pattern during NWC (alert and active)

Q

What are Alpha Waves?

A

Description: Reasonably high frequency and low amplitude

Association: typical brainwave pattern when awake but very relaxed, very drowsy and about to fall asleep (i.e. daydreaming). Eyes are often closed.

Q

What are Theta Waves?

A

Description: Medium frequency and mixed amplitude

Association: typical brainwave pattern during the early stages of sleep. Also seen in young children and psychopaths, may be caused by frustration.

Q

What are Delta Waves?

A

Description: A steady pattern of low frequency and high amplitude waves

Association: typical brainwave pattern associated with NREM deep sleep. Also seen in babies and adults with brain tumors.

Q

What are sawtooth waves?

A

Random, fast waves that are slightly bigger than alpha waves. They resemble waves for being awake but occur among the beta-like waves during REM sleep.

17
Q

What is and ECG?

A

DARE the electrical activity of heart muscles.

18
Q

Brainwaves Summary

A
  • Beta Waves (Awake)
  • Alpha Waves (NREM)
  • Theta Waves (NREM)
  • Delta Waves (NREM)
  • Sawtooth-beta like waves (REM)
19
Q

What is a sleep lab?

A

A place used for scientific research on sleep. Usually resembles a bedroom in order to reduce the effect of an artificial environment.
