Chloramphenicol
Cidal or Static?

Bacteriostatic for most.

Cidal against Haemophilus influenzae, strep pneumoniae, Neisseria meningitidis

4

Chloramphenicol
Mechanisms of Resistance

-Reduced permeability
-Ribosomal mutation
-Acetyltransferase inactivation

5

Chloramphenicol
Absorption

Well absorbed int he GI tract

6

Chloramphenicol
Distribution

Lipid soluble
Not highly protein bound
Good conc in CSF

7

Chloramphenicol
Elimination

Metabolized by the liver.

Adjust dosing in LIVER failure.
