Franks

A

Germanic Tribe // From Modern Day France, or Gaul. The Pope originally sought out the help of Charles Martel, but his successor Pepin is the one who allied the Franks and the church. This is significant because the franks defeated the lombards and returned the land that had been captured back to the church which became known as the papal states. In the following years, this lead the church to be more dependent on others such as Charlemagne.
