The person who started Christian Monasticism (251-356). He devoted his life to prayer after hearing the gospel story of the rich young man. He was also a hermit

St. Patrick
Ireland; 389-461, Established monasteries
St. Brigid
Ireland; founded Kildare, a double monastery for men and women
St. Martin of Tours
France; 316-397, Established monasteries to evangelize barbarians.
St. Columba
Scotland; 521-597, an Irish monastery monk, established a monastery. From there, it spread back to the European continent
St. Athanasius
Eastern Monasticism spread west largely because of his written work, “The Life of Anthony”
Saint Benedict’s community at Monte Cassino
The community taught that life is simple, well ordered, and balanced between work and prayer
Evangelical Councils
Vows of Poverty (frees us from money and possessions), Chastity (frees us from lust and emotional attachments), and Obedience (Frees us from self centeredness and self desires)

The religion of the muslims, A monotheistic faith revealed through Muhammed as the great prophet of Allah (God). The meaning of Islam is submission or surrender

The Islamic sacred book, believed to be the word of God as dictated to Muhammed by the archangel Gabriel and written and read in Arabic, center of Islamic religion.
The Hijra
Muhammed’s departure from Mecca to Medina in AD 622 (the beginning of the muslim calendar.)
Expansion of Islam
began in the Arabian peninsula, spread through the middle east, Jerusalem, Damascus, Antioch, Africa, and up to the bottom of Spain. They were then stopped by Charles Martel.
Christian and Muslim belief: similarities, differences
Similarities: Monotheistic, Abrahamic, focused on the written and word prayer.
Differences: Jesus as a prophet, but not divine; Muhammed as final prophet; Qu’ran
