Cranial Nerves Flashcards
(14 cards)
How is the cerebellum connected to the brain stem?
Cerebellar peduncles- 3 Superior, middle and inferior
How many cranial nerves are in the Brain stem
Nine CN3 to 12 EXCEPT CN11
How is the axial view of brain stem internal structure classified?
Tectum- most posterior
Tegmentum
Base- most anterior
What lies above the posterior aspect of CN4
The inferior and superior colliculi
Contrast the superior and inferior colliculi
Superior- visual response to stimulus- respond to visual stimulus
Inferior- auditory response to stimulus- respond to auditory stimulus
What lies medial to the optic tract, lateral to the mammillary bodies and superior to the pons
Cerebral peduncles
What lies medial to the SUPERIOR colliculius
Pineal gland- control sleep cycle; melatonin
What cranial nerves are in the midbran
3 and 4
What is contained in the pons
Pontine nucleus
Transverse fibres and
middle cerebellar peduncles
4th ventricles
CN 5 to 8

What is in thE OPEN upper medulla
4th ventricle
Inferior Olivery nucleus
CN9, 10 and 12
Cerebellum forms roof of 4th ventricle

What can be seen in closed medulla
Central canal - 4th ventricles covered by neural tissue
No cerebellum covering
Dorsal columns

What is the CNS blood supply
Anterior- internal carotid artery Posterior- vertebral basilar artery
For each cranial nerve, draw a table that shows its origin, modality and function

Name the cranial nerve nuclei from superior to inferior
