Pharmacological basics Flashcards

What is a drug
A chemical substance that bind to a specific target in a biological system to bring about a physiological effect.
What is drug selectivity?
Lock and key hypothesis; how well a drug bind to its target protein
What affects selectivity
Drug design
Way of taking the drug
What are the conditions for the most safest and effective drug
Safest- high therapeutic index; concentration without producing toxic effects
Effective- high selectivity to this target and low adverse effects
What causes side effects of drugs
Drug binding to same target In another part of the body
Drug binding to a different target on same or other tissue
Dosage of drug
What are the different drug targets
Enzymes
Receptors
Ion channels
Transport proteins
What is the effect of drugs (heroine) in the following area of the brain:
Peri-aqueducts grey matter
Ventral- tegmental area
Solitary nucleus
PAG- analgesia
VTA- euphorias
Solitary nucleus- cough suppression
What are the different effects of drugs on targets
Enhance activation
Inhibit activation
Serotonin, dopamine and noradrenaline: which one is more structurally distinct to the rest
Serotonin
