DRV Flashcards
(5 cards)
DRV’s
(Dietary Reference Values)
the amounts of different nutrients that different groups of people in a population need. There are 3 DRV’s: LRNI, EAR and RNI.
LRNI
(Lower reference nutritional intake)
The lowest amount of a nutrient that’s enough for only 2.5% of people in a healthy population .
For example for teenage girls (11 to 18) a LRNI for iron could be 8mg meaning vast majority of girls wouldn’t be getting enough iron if they consumed only 8mg.
EAR
(Estimated Average
Requirement)
estimated average daily requirement of a nutrient or energy for a population of healthy people. Approximately 50% of the population will need more than this figure and 50% would need less.
For example teenage boys aged 15 to 18 could have a EAR of 2800kcal…
RNI
(Reference Nutrient Intake)
amount of a nutrient sufficient (or more than sufficient) for 97.5% of people in a population of healthy people on a daily basis
For example an RNI for teenage boys aged 15 to 18 could be 1000mg calcium a day meaning almost all boys would be meeting their needs if they consumed that much
Safe intake
• Set when there’s not enough data for an RNI, EAR, or LRNI.
• It’s an amount that’s safe for almost everyone, but not too high to be harmful.
• Example: 0.25 mg/day of fluoride — enough to prevent dental caries but not cause fluorosis.
