rejected bio app to explain crime

A

sutherlands work was a direct rejection of a bio predisposition to crime
where racist views of born criminals were popular
people used eugenic genetic arguments violating peoples rights with forced sterilisation of criminals so they wouldnt pass on criminal genes

Q

cannot explain all trends in offending

A
  • cannot explain why younger males are more likely to commit crimes than older males even though older males should have ,ore exposure to pro criminal attitudes
  • cannot explain why more crime is commited by males then females when females are also socialised in criminal families
  • so may not offer a complete explanation perhpas more holistic approach like taking genetics eg MAOH gene in account

Q

overly determinsitic

A
  • not everyone whos exposed to pro criminal att goes on to commit crimes
  • so may sterotype people from these backrounds
-ignores the fact that people have free will in choosing to not offend despite how theyve been socialised
  • ultimatley indicating the theory may be environmentally deterministic
