coding, capacity and duration ao3 Flashcards
(7 cards)
Strength of baddlyes study
Provided evidence for diff in Coding bet stm and Ltm
Dev understanding of memory system and helped dev multi store mem model
Weakness of baddeleys study
Word list was artificial stimuli w no meaning to ppts so baddeleys findings don’t tell us a lot an diff kinds of mem tasks esp in everyday life
not used in do to day to day so limited real life application
Strength of Jacob study
High validity - can be and has been repeated where even more controlled methods were used and findings mirror original ones
Weakness of Peterson and Peterson
Stim was artificial
Constant syllables don’t reflect everyday mem so has low external validity
Strength of bahrick
High external validity
Reaseaxhers investigated meaningful memories ( ppls faces and names) - didn’t use artificial stim
When studies on LTM done w meaningless pics - recall rates were lower so bahricks is more realistic reflection on LTM duration
Weakness of bahrick
Use of only American participants in sample limits the generalisability of the findings of the study to other non-American populations.
• Field experiment means that there was a lack of control over confounding variables. Participants could have been in contact with some peers more than other participants or looked at their yearbook photos to rehearse their memory.
This makes the findings less reliable.
Weakness of miller
Too many Chunks
Miller may have overestimated STM capacity.
. Cowan reviewed other research → capacity of STM
is only about 4 (+/- 1) chunks.
• Vogel et al conducted research on the capacity of
STM for visual information → 4 chunks is the limit.
• This suggests that the lower end of Miller’s estimate (five items) is more appropriate than seven items.
