homeostasis Flashcards

1

Q

what is pyrogen?

A

a substance that is released by specific immune cells which initiates a fever by acting on the hypothalamus which increases the body’s thermostat

Q

describe homeostasis

A

process of keeping the environment inside the body constant

  • makes us independent of our external environment
  • body cells work best at optimum temp with particular PH

Q

what is the body responsible for regulating?

A
  • core body temp
  • ph and concentrations of dissolved substances in bodily fluids
  • conc of glucose in the blood
  • conc of oxygen in the blood
  • blood pressure
  • concentration of metabolic wastes

Q

what are feedback systems?

A

the circular situation in which the body responds to change or stimulus with the response altering the original stimulus

Q

what are the steps in a feedback look (stimulus-response model) and what are their purposes?

A
  1. stimulus = change in the environment that causes a change
  2. receptor = cells or tissues that detects a change (specific)
  3. modulator = process the message received from the receptor
  4. effector = muscle or gland that carries out the response
  5. response = result of the effector
  6. feedback - positive or negative?

Q

what is the difference between positive and negative feedback systems?

A

negative - response decreases original stimulus, counteracts stimulus
positive - response increases original stimulus, reinforces stimulus

Q

how is core temp monitored?

A

core temp is detected by thermoregulators in the hypothalamus
they detect temp of blood flowing through the brain
