Homeostasis + Excretion Flashcards
(22 cards)
Ectotherm
Animal whose body temperature varies with environmental temperature.
Endotherm
Animal that generate their own heat by metabolic reactions.
How is blood different to glomerular filtrate
Blood contains blood cells, glomerular does not.
Parts of nephron that absorb water
Loop of Henle/ Proximal convoluted tube/Distal convoluted tube
Substances absorbed during urine formation
Glucose/ amino acids/ minerals/ salts.
Sebaceous gland
Produce and release sebum on the surface of the skin.
Excretion
Getting rid of waste products of metabolism
Homeostasis
Maintenance of a constant internal environment.
Filtration
Process where waste substances are removed from the blood. eg. bowmans capsule/glomerulus.
Hormone and when is released
Anti-diuretic hormone (ADH). Due to low water content in the blood.
ADH acts in..?
Distal convoluted tube/collecting duct.
ADH effect
More water is reabsorbed.
Epidermis
Outer cornified layer: full of keratin. Mostly dead.
Inner epidermis: Granular layer: keratin is formed.
Malpighiam laye: contains cells that mitosis. Produces melanin
Dermis
Contains sweat glands, nerve endings, sebaceous glands and blood vessels.
Innermost layer
Of adipose tissues: full of fat rich cells.
Piloerection
(Cold conditions)
In which hair stand up and trap a layer of warm air close to skin. Erector muscles contract.
Warm conditions
Sweat produced. As it evaporates it removes heat from the body.
Blood vessels skin enlarge ( vasodilation). More blood flowing to the surface witj heat loss.
Excretion organs
Skin, lungs, kidney
Kidney
-Filter waste products from blood ( in cortex)
- Reabsorb useful materials from filtrate ( in cortex and medulla)
-Secrete some substances from the blood into filtrate ( cortex)
Bladder
Stores urine.
Urethra
Carries urine out of the body.
Renal veins
Carry purified blood from the kidneys back to vena cava for circulation around the body.
