The Heart and Blood Vessels Flashcards
(29 cards)
Systole
Heart muscle is contracting.
Diastole
Heart muscle is relaxing.
Closed circulatory system
Blood flows completely within blood vessels.
Open circulatory system
Blood in vessels passes through different parts of the body.eg insects.
Purpose of valves
Prevent backflow of blood
Pulmonary vein
Carries oxygenated blood in the body/richest in oxygen.
Pulmonary artery
Carries deoxygenated blood in the body.
Pulse
Throbbing/expansion of an artery
Blood pressure
Force of blood against the walls of blood vessels.
Adv of closed system
Blood circulates faster/ blood flow easier to regulate.
Hepatic portal vein
Carries blood between intestine and liver
Renal vein
Blood lowest in metabolic waste
Vena cava
Carries deoxygenated blood into the right atrium of the heart.
Septum importance
To prevent deoxygenated blood and oxygenated blood from mixing.
Muscle in heart
Cardiac muscle/ never tires.
Why wall of left ventricle is thicker
The left side of the heart pumps blood around the systemic circuit
Location and role of SA node
Wall of right atrium/ sends out impulses causing the atria to contract.
Location and role of AV node
Wall between the ventricles or between septum/ sends out impulses causing the ventricles to contract.
What causes heartbeat sounds
Valves closing.
Circuit that the right ventricle plumps blood
Pulmonary
Circuit that the left ventricle plumps blood
Systemic
Coronary artery
To supply heart muscle with blood.
Why walls of atria thin
Pump blood short distance
Why walls of ventricles thick
Pump blood long distance.
