What was the policy adopted by Napoleon concerning France and the Empire?
-“France First” = watchword of imperial economic policies
What was imposed onto satellite states to get more money from them?
-removing guilds and internal customs/ barriers ( promoting free trade)
-rigorous tax collection- Kingdom Of Italy: tax revenue increased by 50% from 1805 to 1811 +
What were the donations in the Grand Empire?
-Donations were essentially when someone bought land gained from the Grand Empire to ensure loyalty.
-Poland and Westphalia’s lands provided 25% of donations
What was the effect of donations on the grand Empire?
-Negative on the income of the satellite states whose land was taken
-Duchy of Warsaw lost 1/5 income due to this (NB did not care for the grand empire tho- “France First”!!!
Who was hurt most by the economic policies in the grand empire?
-Satellite states: they were suppliers of raw material and were not allowed to grow manufacturing industries that could compete with France
-“France First”- inc. annexed territories

-Berlin Decree of 1806

What was the continental system?
-Blockade of all British Trade into continental Europe to attack Britain’s trade after NB realised he could not fight Britain directly after failure at Battle of Trafalgar

-Belgium: textile industry boomed due to ban on cotton
-Rhineland: Mining did well
Which places did not benefit from the Continental system and why?
-Bordeaux: Wine industries in France did poorly with trade cut off from Britain
-Lombardy and Piedmont (Italy): silk industries rapidly declined
What was the overall success of the NB’s economic policies
-Not very successful for satellite states: overproduction for limited domestic markets meant prices dropped which meant industries were damaged
-Also heavy taxation

-Louis Bonaparte reluctant to enforce the continental blockade in Holland(satellite state from 1806)
-Jerome Bonaparte reluctant to enforce the Continental Blockade in Westphalia (1808-satellite state)
-NB continued to import army boots from Kettering town in England
-aims; NB continued to trade with Kettering - army boots
-value of British exports entering through Portuguese ports doubled between 1809 to 180 and 1809= £1m, 1811 = £6m
