-General Hoche defeated a rising at Quiberon bay in southern Brittany resulting in execution of 700 rebels
What helped to diminish Royalism returning?
-oath of loyalty in February 1795 from clergyman to state was reintroduced
-success at war: recapture of Austrian Netherlands and United Provinces was turned in the Batavian republic
-Prussians opted out in April (peace of Basel)
-Spain forced to become allies in July
Is the name of White Terror misleading?
YES:
-Terror was not very centralised or especially violent
-“White” is the colour of the Bourbon dynasty but the White Terror was not predominately royalist and involved others
