Acute
sudden onset, lasts a short period of time
Chronic
develops slowly, lasts longer
Prodromal
vague nonspecific symptoms before onset of specific symptoms
Insidious
vague or nonspecific - may not be noticed - symptoms that come on slowly, not noticed at first
Latent
no symptoms are present, but disease is
Predisposing factor
increases probility of disease
Precipitating factor
condition that will cause disease
Morbidity
condition of being diseased
Mortality
risk of death from disease
Syndrome
group of symptoms may be caused by interrelated problems occurring together characterizing a specific disease
Disorder
abnormality of function, irregularity, disturbance
Remission
symptoms disappear or diminish
Exacerbation
symptoms reappear or become more severe
Complication
onset of a disease in a person who is already coping with another disease
Sequelae
unwanted outcome from a disease – occurs after the initial acute phase of the disease weeks or months later

Intrinsic
pathological, or disease-causing, change that has occurred from inside the body has occurred as a result of intrinsic factors
Extrinsic
the cause is from outside the body, like an animal bite, chemical burn, radiation, and iatrogenic causes
Idiopathic
unknown cause – spontaneous origin
Iatrogenic
occur as a result of treatment – cancer – hair loss most common but also lymphedema, infertility
Nosocomial
occurs as a consequence of being in the hospital
