Intro to Basic Pharmacology Flashcards
Study of drugs, their actions, dosage, indications, and adverse effects.
Pharmacology
A substance that alters biologic activity.
Drug
Allergic Reaction
Hypersensitivity
Unexpected or unusual reactions to drugs.
Idiosyncratic reactions
Negative effects on the body due to a medication error, drug overdose.
Iatrogenic reactions.
Harmful effects on the fetus.
Teratogenic
Effect increased.
Synergism
Effect decreased.
Antagonism
One drug enhances the effect of a second drug.
Potentiation
Amount required to produce specific desired effect in an adult.
Dosage of drugs
Simple method, but has longer time for onset.
Orally
May be subcutaneous, intramuscular, or intravenous.
Parenterally (Injection)
Rapid onset, but needs effective technique.
Inhalation
On skin or mucous membranes.
Topical
Some drugs stimulate receptor.
Agonist
Some drugs block receptors.
Antagonist
The type of drugs you, yourself may by in the drug store.
Over the counter
The type of drugs a Dr. must give you a prescription for.
Prescription
Refers to the specific chemical structure of the compound.
Chemical Name
Official “nonproprietary” name (shorter than chemical name).
Generic Name
Name assigned by the drug manufacturer.
Trade Name
Drug enters body - blood - target site - exerts effects - metabolized and secreted.
Administration and Distribution of Drugs.
Chemically changed into compounds that are less effective and more water soluble.
Metabolized.
