What is Thorndikes law of exercise
-Rehearsing or repeating actions strengthens reinforcement
-e.g. in hockey, repeated dribbling practice strengthens s-r bonds
What is Thorndikes law of effect
-If followed by a pleasant reaction, then the s-r bonds are strengthened. If the following reaction is negative, then the s-r bonds are weakened
-e.g in rugby, positive comments about a players tackling technique strengthens s-r bonds and negative comments weaken s-r bonds
What is Thorndikes law of readiness
-The athlete must be both mentally and physically capable of performing the skill efficiently
-e.g. If a rugby player is injured then they might not be able to catch and pass effectively
What is positive reinforcement
The stimulus is given when the desired response occurs
What is negative reinforcement
The stimulus is withdrawn when the desired response occurs
What is punishment
Giving a stimuli to prevent a response occurring
What is shaping
A coach uses positive reinforcement to gradually shape a performers behaviour towards a desired outcome
