Lecture 10 Flashcards
Alimentary II (38 cards)
The two ends of the small intestine are?
pylorus and ileocaecal valve
3 components of the small intestine?
duodenum, jejunum, ileum
Is the duodenum suspended or retroperitoneal?
retroperitoneal except for first part which is attached to greater and lesser omentum
What is the 1st part of duodenum also known as?
duodenal cap
What are the permanent circular folds in duodenum called?
plicae
What empties at the greater duodenal papilla?
bile duct and main pancreatic duct
Is the lesser duodenal papilla above or below the greater duodenal papilla?
Above by 2cm
Relationship between duodenum and transverse colon
Duodenum is posterior
How many parts to the duodenum and what are their names?
1 - superior
2 - descending
3 - horizontal
4 - ascending
What are the flexures in the duodenum and where are they?
1-2: superior duodenal flexure
2-3: inferior duodenal flexure
4-jejunum: duodenojejunal
Relationship between bile duct and main pancreatic duct?
Join together before entering greater duodenal papilla
The greater duodenal papilla marks the site of which landmark?
Junction between foregut and midgut
What is longer - jejunum or ileum?
ileum (3/5 cf 2/5)
Where does jejunum start and ileum end?
duodenojejunal flexure and ileocaecal valve
Are jejunum and ileum suspended or retro?
suspended by mesentery attached to posterior abdominal wall called the root of mesentery
What folds are found in the jejunum and ileum?
permanent internal transverse folds
How to distinguish between jejunum and ileum?
Jejunum has:
- longer vasa recta and fewer arcades
- less fatty mesentery
- larger and longer folds (permanent internal transverse folds - ileum has almost no folds in distal part)
Are Peyer’s patches more common in jejunum or ileum?
Ileum (but can also be found elsewhere in GI tract)
What are the components of the large intesntine?
Caeceum/appendix, ascending, transverse, descending, sigmoid colon, rectum, anus
What are three features of L intestine not found in S intestine?
- sacculations
- taenia coli (longitudinal external muscle)
- epiploic/omental appendices
Is the caecum suspended or retro?
Neither, it hangs off the ascending colon
Where is the caecum located?
R iliac fossa
What is posterior to the caecum
retrocaecal recess
What joins caecum to the small intestine?
ileocaecal valve
