Lecture 5 Flashcards
Arteries of Trunk (28 cards)
What is a portal system and give an example
Where a vein or arteriole connects two capillary networks (e.g. hepatic portal vein connecting capillaries of intestine to liver sinusoids/capillaries)
What artery supplies lungs?
bronchial arteries
What supplies walls of arteries?
vasa vasorum
What nerves are involved in contraction of the muscle of artery wall?
vasomotor nerves
What are the 2 types of nerves associated with arteries?
- vasomotor which penetrate adventitia and mostly sympathetic
- nerves which use artery to reach other organs remain outside the adventitia
What is the ligamentum arteriosum?
Fibrous remnant which joins root of L pulmonary artery to inferior surface of arch of aorta
Where is R pulmonary artery with reference to aorta and VC?
Posterior to aortic arch and SVC
Where is L pulmonary artery with reference to aorta and bronchus?
Anterior to descending aorta and L principle bronchus
What are the 4 regions of the aorta?
Ascending, arch, thoracic/descending, abdominal
Where does R coronary artery travel and branch into?
Runs in R atrioventricular groove/coronary sulcus and branches into R marginal branch and posterior interventricular branch
Where does L coronary artery branch into?
Branches almost immediately into circumflex artery and anterior interventricular artery
What branches off the aortic arch?
R - brachiocephalic trunk - R common carotid and R subclavian artery
L - L common carotid and L subclavian artery
What are the lateral branches of the thoracic aorta?
posterior intercostal arteries
What are the anterior branches of the thoracic aorta?
supply to bronchi, lungs, oesophagus, mediastinum, pericardium
What are the anterior branches of the abdominal aorta?
coeliac trunk - just below median arcuate ligament, supply foregut
superior mesenteric artery - supply midgut
inferior mesenteric artery - supply hindgut
What are the lateral branches of the abdominal aorta? (7)
2x inferior phrenic -> superior suprarenal
2x middle suprarenal
2x renal -> inferior suprarenal
2x gonadal
4x lumbar
1x medial sacral
2x common iliac -> internal/external iliac
What does each common iliac artery go on to form?
Internal iliac and external iliac
Where does external iliac pass through to become?
Pass through femoral canal to become femoral artery.
What branches off external iliac before entering femoral canal?
inferior epigastric artery
Where does internal thoracic artery branch off?
subclavian artery
What does internal thoracic branch into?
musculophrenic and superior epigastric
Where does musculophrenic artery provide?
supplies diaphragm and 7-9th intercostal spaces
Where do superior and inferior epigastric supply?
anterior abdominal wall
Where does brachiocephalic branch off?
behind centre point of manubrium
