6
Q

What is the action of the Geniohyoid muscle?

A
  • Elevates and draws hyoid bone forward
  • If the hyoid is fixed, depress the mandible

9
Q

What is the action of the Mylohyoid muscle?

A
  • Elevate the floor of the mouth and hyoid
  • When the hyoid is fixed, it depresses the mandible

11
Q

What does the Mylohyoid have and what is the clinical significant of this?

A

Posterior Free Ridge
- Infection can spread behind the mylohyoid and come to the superior level
- Pus formation can elevate the mylohyoid, go superiorly to the tongue which can effect breathing

16
Q

Which artery runs down the Submandibular gland?

A

Facial artery runs downwards in a deep groove in the lateral surface of the superficial lobe

17
Q

Describe the duct of the Submandibular gland

A
  • Emerges from anterior surface of deep lobe
  • Runs forwards and opens at the sublingual papilla at the base of lingual frenulum
18
Q

Where does the Sublingual Gland open onto?

A

The surface of the sublingual fold through number of small ducts (not a single duct)

19
Q

Describe the function of the Submandibular Ganglion

A

Parasympathetic innervation of both submandibular & sublingual glands

20
Q

List the Nerves in the floor of the mouth

A

1) Lingual Nerve
2) Hypoglossal Nerve
3) Glossopharyngeal Nerve

21
Q

Where does the Lingual Nerve pass through?

A

Beneath superior constrictor muscle

22
Q

What is the Lingual nerve adjacent to?

A

Medial surface of mandible adjacent to the roots of the third molar tooth

23
Q

What does the Lingual Nerve supply?

A

General sensory & (taste) fibres to anterior 2/3’s of the tongue

24
Q

Where does the Lingual nerve run laterally?

A

Hyoglossus muscle above the submandibular duct

25
Name the landmark for the Hypoglossal nerve
Crosses the **external and internal carotid arteries**
26
What does the Hypoglossal nerve supply?
**Motor to extrinsic (except palatoglossus) & intrinsic muscles** of the tongue
27
Where does the Hypoglossal nerve run through?
Runs forwards **on the hyoglossus**, below the lingual nerve
28
What does the Glossopharyngeal nevre supply?
**General sensory & taste** to **posterior 1/3 of the tongue**
29
Where does the Glossopharyngeal nerve pass through?
Deep to **hyoglossus**
30
List the blood vessels in the floor of the mouth
1) Lingual Artery 2) Lingual Vein
31
Describe the Lingual artery
**Branch** of the **external carotid artery**
32
Describe the Lingual vein
Opens to **internal jugular vein**
